  1. Yep, basically it starts with a bunch of friends and 1 guy who owns the server. The owner ends up getting all the money and nobody else gets anything. Happens in the real world too over and over again in business, see The Social Network as college friends become enemies over billions.

  2. People don't realise, players take their online videogame worlds and characters very, very seriously, perhaps more so in private atmosphere. Even my dad guild in Classic WoW would have multiple hour long discussions on how loot council would distribute the good loot when it would drop, with plenty of drama from hunters and warlocks demanding loot despite clearly being inferior classes in Classic that was common knowledge...in 2005. We beat Nefarian and a hunter mysterious got the Ashkandi on the argument on "melee weaving" being efficient DPS, we learn later on from admin leaks that he paypal'd real money to secure the drop.

  3. Except there are tons of places that are run with almost 100% voluntary staff and simply wouldn't function without fanatical staff, often people who can afford to spend all their time on it. Yes they also get abused for free money by the owner, but that happens in every business.
