I don't think Riot games is as big in the west as people want to believe. If anything much of their games are falling off last few years. Much of League's popularity was based around e-sports LCS events and their twitch streams, something that took a huge hit over the pandemic. Many of the big streamers and content creators have quit League. Sure League is still massive in the East and becoming bigger from Wild Rift on phones which is a big deal over there, but MOBA games were really a 2010's thing, they've been dropping in popularity for many years. Riot diversifying into more games and genres is sort of a last big push to save the company from irrelevance in the west as League itself becomes passé.
