I agree but you have to look at it from Fords perspective. By the 90s, Ford was outselling the Fbody twins by such a large margins it didn’t make sense for them to put bigger engines into the mustangs. More V6 mustangs were sold than V8s. SVT was cooking up an awesome T-Bird but it was scrapped because the money wasn’t there due to low sales. Ford isn’t really “late to the dance” they just hold back their performance parts for their race customers. They always have. Ford is more interested in selling cars and that’s fine because it has created such a huge aftermarket for their vehicles. If I’m not mistaken, Ford did come out with the Shelby Mustang that beat the Z-28. It was like that in 95 and 2000 with the ultra low production R mustangs. They did that back in the 60s too. Mopar was selling the terrible for the street 426 hemi and Ford put the 427 in a few cars but they were not good for normal driving and required a lot of tuning. They would offer the 427 SOHC over the counter in the parts division but they didn’t put it in their production cars. And the 3.7 V6 should have stayed in the Mustang as a base engine. There is so much potential in that engine and I would have loved to see a performance version of that car from the factory.
