I would stay at my paternal grandmother's farm for a couple of weeks every summer vacation growing up. My grandpa died young (age 42) and she handled the farm, the kids and everything by herself. She was a German immigrant and ran the farm with her two sons who still lived at home (she had 8 kids). Everyone was up at 4:30am to get ready to start the day. Running a farm is hard work and keep in mind this was in the 1960s and 70s. We had electricity and a phone, but used an outhouse and had to pump water from a well. Grandma cooked on this enormous cast iron stove and she was a great cook. The chickens, geese, pigs and cows have to be fed and the cows milked. There was always work to do and when the sun went down you were ready to go to bed, believe me. But it was fun and a great learning experience, which is why my parents wanted me to do it.

In the 1970s some women ran cooking schools out of their homes for girls. My college friend's GF's mother ran one and she was a fantastic cook. We guys would show up when the class was over to eat what the girls cooked and it was always awesome. The mom loved it 'cause she didn't have to deal with leftovers. The class was 8 girls maximum and it was always booked. Try that now, LOL, it'd never happen.
