Nothing helps you learn better than being around people who speak the language you’re trying to learn.

India and Japan are two very different places in Asia. Its cool to hear how someone a part of both worlds views their life in Japan.

Being in the countryside or small towns is a really good way of immersing yourself in another country. Big cities are usually tailored to be recognizable and filled with tourist attractions for foreigners. So they don’t always represent the country as a whole and what living there is like.

Kenyans also have samosas too. And chapatis. Picked it up from Indians who came to Kenya during the colonial period. They’re quite tasty.

All these people have so much character in the way they dress and what they all do is so fascinating.

I do like how a couple of them emphasized that different states can have vastly different social cultures.

Homelessness is truly a universal problem. I hope these people stay safe.

The common responses of becoming more respectful, patient, and considerate of others is really something we should learn to do more today.

Japan seems culturally agnostic when it comes to religion. Still acknowledging churches and shinto temples/shrines as sacred and important, and perform rituals and ceremonies for them. But don’t necessarily follow any religion in particular.

Pretty wild how normalized it is. Wtf.

What’s funny about this is that being gay or trans wasn’t seen as taboo as late as 2000 years ago. Or even a few hundred years ago in some places. Edit: I’m primarily talking about pre-European contact Japan.

I always like seeing what other people in different countries think of us.
29
Dude their outfits look so cool.
20
Very interesting answers.

People really need to be okay with confrontation
17
Very interesting answers

Spain just has really handsome people in general.
17
Being mixed in any way puts you in a social and cultural limbo I guess.
16
The Japanese countryside has always been so awesome.
14
He’s 92 and looks and sounds like he’s 62.
14
Since beauty standards are always nearly unachievable you might as well just do you.

I can find this a little relatable growing up in the US but born in Kenya. And being raised in Kenyan diaspora communities here in the states of Georgia and California.

Whenever I meet someone coming to the US for the first time and hear what they think, I always like to tell them that the US is a big country and different parts of it are drastically different from each other. In racial demographics, suburban/urban/rural social culture, geographic landscape, political climate, etc. As someone who grew up in southern Georgia and moved to southern California in high school, I can say the variety in the US is so much, it’s almost like you’re in a whole other country just going from one state to another.

Being a child of immigrant parents from Kenya, and being born in Kenya myself although spending my whole life in the US, I was always exposed to Swahili and the tribal language of Kikuyu. I cant fluently speak either of those languages, but growing up hearing them all the time you learn to identify words and their associations a little. Imo German is my favorite language. I spent a year and half in Kenya in 2012 and took a German class. But that was so long ago I’ve forgotten most of it.

I love how you can see the differences in view points from the younger generation and older generation. I think it’s very possible that going abroad for work could actually help Japan out economically. Similarly to how lots of people immigrate to the US from foreign countries, start making more money, then send a portion of the money they make back home to their families. Something like that. And maybe if and when they decide to come back to Japan, they could bring in new trades into the country.

This is really interesting. Didn’t know this was happening at all.
10
Quality of work is better than the quantity of work.
10
Japan’s immigration policy is super strict.
10
It looks so weird 😂

What I keep hearing from all these interviews is learning how to navigate the social culture.
8
I haven’t heard much about people who are half Japanese and half Latino. This is pretty nice.
8
My favorite anime are still Full Metal Alchemist Brotherhood, Berserk (2016), and Hellsing Ultimate. Mob Psycho is pretty great too. Golden Boy is really funny. 😂 91 Days is another really good one that’s kinda slept on.
7
Having a Japanese citizenship seems like a world easter egg
6
The first guy didn’t want to come to the US because he thinks it’s a little too dangerous. I can’t blame him.
6
The promiscuity in Japanese social culture is crazy.
6
Really nice interviews. The guy who drew out a map of the train station for himself is pretty wise. The tattoo on one of the other interviewees looked so cool.
6
One Piece is definitely overrated. As well as Dragon Ball Z.
5
This was very beautiful. It’s very good that they manage to stay functional. Inter-racial or inter-cultural relationships can be very hard to navigate I’m guessing.
5
Oh my god I’m Kenyan-American like the guy. Nice.
5
It’s interesting that mixed race people are technically entirely new racial groups but we still feel the need to put them in one group. This is especially true with anyone who’s half black.
4
I want to start watching Kotaro Lives Alone, and Mob Psycho.
4
Japan is still super homogenous. I can imagine that you stick out a lot as half-black.
4
It’s so important for people to have a healthy level of appreciation and satisfaction with themselves.
4
This is awesome
4
If I were in Japan I’d love to live in rural Nagano.
4
Japanese car and street racing culture is very interesting.
4
Another city that never sleeps.
3
Sounds like things you really gotta get used to 😂
3
From what I’ve seen the working culture in the cities can be really suffocating and exhausting. I guess that can be a big motivator for people to leave.
3
This is great
