Good points about these non-violent movements.  It is especially illustrative how MLK had armed bodyguards, and the role the Panthers played.  However, the nonviolent part was crucial.   Gandhi kicked the Brits out of India; that's good enough.  He didn't create a paradise on earth of course.  And he did it in a way so India remained allies with Britain.  Likewise, the nonviolence of MLK and Mandela made it possible to get some establishment buy-in, instead of having to fight it out in the streets.   I suppose both armed and nonviolent movements are needed.  Sometimes even a nonviolent movement is armed.
