This is why Adam Smith concluded that regulation is necessary for a free and informed market to survive. Unfortunately, the term free market has been hijacked by those who want free reign to monopolize. Also notice Smith's term was "Free and Informed" Markt -- the "informed" part is almost always left out of the debate or news story. Obscuring information is the easiest avenue of attack on the consumers and small producers. Thus, we have artificial sugar officially, by law, labeled as a 'natural flavor.' The solution? Vodka. Tons of it.

  3. Agree on single payer reducing costs. Also free market can help. In singapore they have 1) universal coverage, and 2) free choice in doctors, hospitals, and pharmacies. Their universal coverage is a combination of insurance through work, from the government, and privately bought. However that is attained it is huge in reducing costs, but we shouldn't ignore the ability of personal choice to also reduce costs and improve quality.
