The entire budget of the US is about equal to a 12k/ year UBI. (3 trillion or so). It would take ALL taxes and revenues, plus borrowing.

Agree UBI is not a govt handout any more than building roads etc. It could stimulate the economy. However the wealthy do spend their money; as you mention in investments, which have risk and gain, and the $ goes to business and thus into the pockets of workers. That said, Adam Smith held that the three categories of tax should be equal, thus Cap Gains tax is too low now (or income tax is too high). Loopholes for the biggest companies are real bad. The big issue with UBI how to pay for it, as it would be equal to the entire current US govt. spending. We still want roads and such, also.

We already have very high taxes on corporate profit (too many loopholes for giant corps is a big problem though). Tax on business gets passed right to the consumer. But I like your drift... how about this: 1. Tax stock transactions at 1 cent/ trade. 2. Give this directly to the people as a Universal Dividend of sorts. It's a small start, but structurally sound I think.

I think we should start with $100/ person/ mo and see how that works. That's like 10% of the budget. We could save that much by ending the Use it or Lose it rule for govt agencies.

I like the simplicity of a simple check to each person. I also think that a negative income tax is pretty simple to implement in the current system; it covers less but requires less $ and philosophical adjustment.

Good point, taxes are not high on historical context, but they are high in comparison with other countries today. So if we raise it, companies will outsource more. In general, tax on business is passed on to the consumer anyway. I think we have to be more creative to fund a UBI, is all. Things like, single payer as you mention, also energy tech, they can big in the long run, and we'll have a lot more $ to "play with." Imagine if we saved 1/2 of the energy we now waste!
