I might disagree that it is a madness. It may be instead a fairly effective propaganda effort, rational in it's aims and execution. It's not usually considered madness to believe what everyone around you is saying. With audiences compartmentalized, and media mostly on the same track, that's what they have managed to create -- a thought bubble. This is not very different from what happens regularly in American politics. The tail wags the dog.
