They say it doesn't work because it works too well, so to speak. It detects fragments of viral RNA even if there is no active infection. Therefore, technically it is not correct to say that PCR tests for Covid-19, which is the disease. It tests for the virus, SARS-cov-2. . A different issue is that the test totals are often reported as if they are counts of the infections in a country. They are not. The true infections can be 2x or 20x the test positive numbers, and only an actual survey can find out.

The testing is not designed to estimate the number of infections in the population. . Any use for that purpose is just silly. The tests are ONLY for individuals and businesses etc. to decide how to act and how to treat. It should not matter how they are reported. . Unfortunatley the US is not doing any proper studies to track actual infection numbers, which are ~ 10x the case numbers.

I am concerned that other billionaires are not as generous or involved in doing good works.

@pumpkineater23 Excellent example!

The goat and papaya was a publicity stunt not a real test.

Cases are going down in almost every state. It's not reporting delays at this point. . https://coronavirus.jhu.edu/data/new-cases-50-states
1
Indeed, without surveys to estimate population prevalence, we generally need to divide the rates by 10 to roughly account for the missed cases.

False. It's 99.5% survive.
1
@mahamiddecided3787 Well that is possible but I think I'd have to see a study to confirm that. I would think 10% get sick enough they would not call it "mild." . Indiana did a proper study and found a death rate of 0.26% -- but that was in April so it should be lower now! You could be right, but I have to see some data.

Masks give 14% risk reduction, eye protection another 10%. . (meta analysis of 174 studies)

looking good

yup. but too late now wave is mostly over there . https://coronavirus.jhu.edu/data/new-cases-50-states

@textex6883 good question
1
I agree. I don't believe there is generally reduced reporting in the US. Nearly every state is showing declining in this third wave now. They are not all deciding to wait until 2021 to do their job. . https://coronavirus.jhu.edu/data/new-cases-50-states
1
Proper studies usually find a rate of 0.1% to 1%. .

@davidwright7193 As soon as you say "no evidence" i realize you haven't looked.

@gatherfeather3122 So... a doctor getting a vaccine doesn't protect others? I assume you are joking. If not then think harder. I will laugh in anticipation of further punch lines. hehehe haha.
1
@ajkmsteph I agree. The states report the data, and they are not all in some massive conspiracy to falsify the data, which is impossible on a large scale anyway. . The fact is that the third wave seems to be reaching a plateau in the US. Most states are declining in fact. https://coronavirus.jhu.edu/data/new-cases-50-states

The fingertip monitors are cheap too. We got one for mom from Walgreens. . Dr. Mobeen I think had a good bit on how to use it to tell when / if a person sick at home needs doctors help.

@garyfumeaux9226 I guess u don't watch this channel
1
@marthahutchinson5217 It seems that the natural immunity from surviving is stronger than the vaccine immunity. So probably do not need it. But also I don't know of any reason to not get the vaccine, except if it is scarce and others need it first.

paywalled

US cases reaching a plateau, it looks like. . Also see https://coronavirus.jhu.edu/data/new-cases-50-states for state by state graphs on a map

I think that a small virus like this one is not well shielded and would be eliminated effectively by UV. . Some viruses are tough, like smallpox, by having thick coatings. . I am using an ozone duffel bag designed for getting rid of odor from hunting gear. I'm pretty sure the O3 is reactive enough to speed the virus falling apart.
1
yes, especially when they aren't given information on what is happening! . People are doing their best, which is a lot better than the leaders are managing in many countries.
1
Those are the same thing to different degrees.
1
@andrewtrip8617 "can" of course. But it would be logical to expect that they would be less.
1
@andrewprice8940 one case? That is unlikely to yield a statistically significant difference.
1
@josewilliams6094 We don't get the types of data we need to respond with flexible and strong measures. . For goodness sake, there is not even a program to monitor infection numbers in the US! . In other words, people have been better than their leaders. At least we are trying.
