Yes, it could have arisen almost anywhere in the world, given that we have one known monitoring location, the UK. Any inference would require world wide data.

Peter S I don't think it's the scientists so much as people mis-using science. Science can only uncover options and consequences; people make decisions. "No ought from is."

Thank you, many have asked about this!

they are not false positives. they are detecting real virus particles.
2
There must be some sort of evidence for taht 70%, but I have not heard what it is, or even what type of evidence. . Look forward to more information

It may not be better at avoiding the immune system. Perhaps, perhaps not.
2
@just_chris1630 Yes it took some time puzzling on it. . There's no details as of yet, since apparently the evidence for increased transmission is circumstantial -- they found a high % of this strain in places that also had a high growth rate of cases.
2
Special would be if it is 70% more transmissible. That might not make it more deadly, of course, just more catchy.
2
maybe. it should select for a virus that hides better, at least. . what we are missing is how this new variant actually is better? How does it achieve this supposed increase in transmission? Not yet known I reckon...

people washing their hands now

From another comment: MJ : "Does this variant spread more quickly? Matt Hancock told the House of Commons on 14 December that initial analysis showed that the new variant “may be associated” with the recent rise in cases in southeast England. However, this is not the same as saying that it is causing the rise. Loman explained, “This variant is strongly associated with where we are seeing increasing rates of covid-19. It’s a correlation, but we can’t say it is causation. But there is striking growth in this variant, which is why we are worried, and it needs urgent follow-up and investigation.”

@kidsteach938 Bad rumors fly while good news waits for the bus.

@michaelwilliams3861 501 is the location of the mutation

@marinaude3462 Let's not blame a nation with almost no evidence it came from there. Coulda gone the other way. Much more likely just on probability alone, a third country was involved. So let's not join the international haters club just yet.

@allangibson2408 actually, about it's single vs paired chromosomes, rather than single vs double stranded.

@essanjay8604 Every living thing mutates. The rates however vary a lot. It is not yet known exactly why they vary. Design feature? Or is every species evolving to minimize mutation and the difference is in how much resources they spend to proof read everything?
1
@kidsteach938 yes it would not be simple. One could do lab work, or via contact tracing see how many nearby infections occurred... in any case we do need to know the evidence.
1
that would have more than 17 variations, I'd think.

@j2simpso Thankfully no Thanksgiving surge appeared. . The whole country has had a big third wave, though, starting long before TG and now leveling off overall, but not in CA yet. . (This is from the worldometer numbers, not any proper surveys)

good point
