@rocklover7437 I didn't say spike. There is a moderate rise, and you said that it didn't rise at all. But other than that I agree. . A focus on cases is wrong, especially using test totals.

True. True. True. False. And yes, I would agree that it is a bit of a gamble to take most any vaccine or medication, in particular new ones.

@delmariecrandall9229 Not just for animals. It's woof a look.

Has Canada done any ransom invitation surveys, to estimate the true prevalence of the virus?
2
@angelatester2471 The Danish results were consistent with anything from a mask benefit of 43% less risk to a mask detriment of 23% more risk of infection. The study was some thousands, but I think number of SARS-2 infections both groups was small, thus the wide confidence interval. . When a CI includes zero, of course, we have to conclude something like, "Evidence for benefit or harm from mask use was inconclusive." . As you say lab experiments show reduced viral load. N95 rank high. they are also more comfortable. The govt. should send them out to each person in the country/ continent IMHO -- in my healthy opinion! -- before each outbreak.
2
@Don B Sorry, yes, the etimate was for the year 2020 for the USA only. . They estimated roughly 300k extra fatalities, about 2/3rds from corona, and 1/3rd from other problems including lockdown created issues.
2
Thanks for the report! In my county in NM, USA, we have a wave going on, declining now, many more cases than the first wave in March. Everyone wears masks in the store. One death, 500 test positives, maybe 5k true cases, out of 25k in the county.
2
PCR yes not true true true (in order) .

@discoverytree3261 Thanks I will check it out. I was wondering about the conditions aspect. Good thing it's being rolled out in phases, for sure.

In my state they have mandated hookey. . (hookey is an old word for skipping school :)

@christinemann6027 Yup. Ivermectin got the nobel prize a few years ago.

there is a moderate rise https://www.worldometers.info/coronavirus/usa/florida/

@rocklover7437 Yes that does make sense
1
@johnwang9914 That is awesome -- Cornell has home grown testing. Locally sourced and organic! . (They also have the nation's largest collection of apple tree varieties)
1
@alan4sure Thank you, I'll check into it, and it helps to have a place name for the search!
1
@alan4sure Found the paper! "For each identified case by mid-April, we estimate there were roughly 12 population infections." https://www.utpjournals.press/doi/pdf/10.3138/cpp.2020-035 . The CDC estimated 8:1 ratio for the US in a September study. . So perhaps a rough estimate would put Alberta's current total at about 10 times the positive test count. A ~10x ratio seems to be fairly common.
1
@angelatester2471 Yes, and I reckon the Oxford AZ team has a ton of doses earmarked for those nations. . Similarly Merck once donated a huge number of Ivermectin doses, which is now showing results in randomized controlled trials for covid.
1
You're number is off by a factor of 10x. . "The analysis released Thursday by the Canadian Institute for Health Information provides a damning snapshot of senior care as of May 25, when long-term care residents made up 81 per cent of all reported COVID-19 deaths in the country compared to an average of 42 per cent among all countries studied." . 19% of 11,000 is over 2000, not 172. https://www.cbc.ca/news/health/coronavirus-canada-long-term-care-deaths-study-1.5626751 .

@kidsteach938 You got me lol. Better than Snopes I hopes! . To be clear, I am correcting any substantive numerical mistake I see today, I am not trying to hit one side or the other or the third. . Educare non disputare. (I made that up) . In my day job I am a border collie, almost literally.
1
@kidsteach938 Iver is a winner, it seems. There are now three of three randomized controlled trials showing excellent results! . Ivermectin won a Nobel Prize in 2016. Time to release the hounds to study it full time and get it out to people asap. Saddle your horse amigo we ride at dawn. . Lockdowns? I agree. We the People of the Toe have often cited Japan as an example of health without lockdown. They have 1/50th the test positive rate as we do in the US without stopping everyday life. . I was in Japan when I was a baby, which is probably a coincidence. I try to be a good influence, but I have to give most of the credit to the Japanese people, themselves, who in their wisdom have honored me today. .
1
@Don B I think that is about right. I saw an estimate of roughly 300,000 excess deaths, of which 200k were corona-related, and 100k could be the result of lockdowns and other interference with normal life.
1
Perhaps SA reached over half the population immune and that would account for the rise and decline pattern. . It is possible that the 800k total is a small fraction of true cases. In the US the test totals miss almost 90% of true cases, many of which are asymptomatic.

@deborahhebblethwaite1865 Ok nice link! 20% = ~ 2200 deaths outside LTC at the time of the study. (as of May 25, 2020) .
1
@deborahhebblethwaite1865 You bet and likewise! I sure hope it's gotten better at the LHC and ... urr.. More TLC in the LTC. . NYC and Sweden also had a big problem with care homes, and WA state also, in the first wave. As we say in Hawaii, "Don't turn your back on the ocean." Aloha and thanks to everyone for their information and views!
1
@mastercommander4535 I agree, hospital rates would be a better measure of the pandemic's local impact than test-positive numbers. . Even better for the big picture would be weekly random invitation surveys.
1
@discoverytree3261 Indeed, appreciate it! They did test it with elderly people. . I saw some great charts on it but I can't find them now...
