@g.t.7362 This wave is less deadly. Also, fewer hospitlizations. . The effect is so strong it is probably from multiple factors.

it doesn't mean that

Well... idk. On one hand, Covid is much more closely related to SARS genetically, and they even have a very similar spike protein. . On the other hand, Covid is closer to the cold in terms of infectiousness. . In any case, immunity to Covid clearly lasts more than 3 months. If not we would be seeing millions of re-infections instead of a few here and there.

@G-ra-ha-m Yeah but Selma hasn't said anything yet so Bloomberg it is.

If it was made in a lab it was not a weapon -- or not a completed weapon at least. . It possibly was a natural virus that escaped from a lab where it was being studied. . It is possibly a natural virus that jumped to people with no lab involved.
1
Two is a tiny number compared to the total infections. . It is actually very good news if there are so few. It means that so far, immunity is nearly 100% after infection. Very good news indeed.
1
yes definitely . if i had antibodies I wouldn't bother with the vaccine, leave it for someone who needed it. . great idea
1
is it better if it is accidental?
1
@Rose-vs5jd Oh yes, good point! The test numbers are not representative, so we don't know much about total infection numbers. . Clearly the deaths and hospitalizations are both way down, which is very good. The news doesn't mention that much.

cats, but not dogs

Herd immunity isn't really a plan. It's a destination, and most plans aim to get there. . In the US we don't have a plan, so it's hard to critique any further. But that is the desired end point of all the plans I have heard of.
1
A person drove off the road in Cambodia. . Why are people still making seat belts?
1
I don't agree. Everyone now says "No" because we see our government screwing up basic stuff like the post office. . Also, many of us are not early adapters. . Give it time to get working, it will be plenty to get herd immunity if the vaccine is good. . Guaranteed. Most AMericans will get the vaccine if it's actually effective and safe.
1
Bats still have coronaviruses but those have different spike p;roteins and can't infect people. . It is rare to jump species, but important.
1
@RussCR5187 The hospitilization rate has gone way down even for the youngest age groups (US). . There's something going on besides schools and testing. The virus has mutated to be less deadly perhaps. . Someday we will invent random sampling and be able to do proper estimates of the numbers. Where is that on the tech tree? .
1
Guardian is terrible at reporting science. . Their only use is to check if they give a link to a reliable source, and then go to that source. Their headlines quite often are contradicted by the primary source.
1
@jaycee6996 Well that is good to hear! Maybe they are getting better. . I quit reading Guardian after too many articles on "faster than light" communication and other inanities a few years back. Read one article last month, the title was directly contradicted by the text. . What was the expert's dose of realism?
1
I'm guessing microchannels etched onto silicon chips
1
@uchihaluis999 It's an easy one. The virus was isolated and sequenced, and the sequences is published. . It's very easy to sequence a virus. Isolating it is not always easy, but if it can be cultured that helps a lot. This one can be cultured I think. .
1
What it means is that reinfection is so rare as to be a great relief. .
1
If it had R<1, cases would not be growing nationally. . They are probably getting close though maybe. Certainly the death rate is almost zero, but that's not due to herd immunity.
1
@joelsombroek Indeed, excellent point! .
1
@barbarabreunis7788 People don't care about history when they use the word like that. It's just trolling.
1
Immune = does not get the virus at all. can't spread it. Resistant = gets it but does not get very sick. can spread it. . (That's how the terms are defined in epizootiology.)
1
@tonypacke6954 yes. although, there would be a level of virus that the gov should say "OK now shut down X Y and Z businesses" (if they are proven to be hot spots). . So we also need proper monitoring, which the USA isn't doing. It's cheap and easy with random samples.
1
the vaccines would probably only have a piece of the virus, so a person could not catch Covid from the vaccine. A person still could have problems, however, so it is a good question.
1
i think that is part of the MATHs protocol . look up Dr. Mobeen
1
Yes, but no. . Yes it picks up 'dead' virus particles. No it does not pick up cold viruses including coronavirus colds.
1
@morlidor Yes. Iceland's random invitation study is one example of why. . They found 0.6% positive nationwide. Therefore, any false positives were more rare than that. . Clearly the test was not picking up many cold viruses. .
