it does seem to help mortality rate i am 100% against mandates in any case
10
@rijamor yup, Sweden's death rate is one of the lowest in Europe
7
Gibraltar had 98 deaths. Was that truly most of the vulnerable population? If so they must be a nation of Spartans.
7
I believe they found cross immunity but i dont recall the paper
4
they remove links
3
Iceland did a nationwide study, and had a false positive rate < 0.6%
3
yup. only random sample surveys can properly estimate the numbers
2
probably 1/10th that, 0.1 or 0.2%
2
@dave1370 yup! random sample surveys find 10x the cases as reported. i used to do surveys like that for birds. geese get better science than people these days
2
@timmyburden5701 Interesting! 55% to 11% to 0%... it all suggests that the type and manner matter a great deal. I use a balaclava for show, and add an N95 under it for hot zones. And sunglasses for a Return of the Cool. I feel Miles ahead. I don't wanna be Walkin in a Blue Haze, Dig?
2
Gibraltar only had 98 unhealthy people in the entire country?
1
unlikely, as Gibralter had a total of 98 deaths from covid.
1
not unless there were only 98 old people in Gibraltar
1
10 to 50% reduction in virions in the air could be important
1
similar to UK and US, a bit higher
1
@WillNewcomb Agree with the figures. It's a matter of opinion what is "much" vs "a bit." US would be about 20% lower than Gibraltar.
1
@WillNewcomb Yes I'd say 37% higher is significant. However, the rates go from 6000/m to 0/m, so on that scale UK US and Gibraltar are similar. It's best I guess to just state the % and leave the adjectives out.
1
What does Sweden say to you?
1
Agree, but the true way to estimate the numbers would be a random sample survey
1
Did Gibraltar only have 98 high risk individuals?
1
50 cases a day in a pop of 30,000 could be consistent with herd immunity
1
How many people have died from it, total, in Gibraltar?
1
Aloha and blessings!
1
acquired natural immunity would prevent cases, not just deaths, i think.
1
yes, probably many people are immune. they need to do ransom sample testing if they want to estimate current prevalence
1
vaccines prevented 80% of infections in one large study of health care workers
1
Did they show decline in protection, or decline in antibodies?
1
That's called boilerplate. A box of peanuts warns "may contain peanuts"
1
worldometers has the mortality data...
1
Did Gibraltar only have 98 vulnerable people?
1
cases would be useful if they were from proper random surveys, not just counts of test positives
1
how many have died in gibraltar? worldometers has the data
1
@Grimlock1979 it's tested, although the results won't be available until 2076
1
I have found numbers like 11% or 14% risk reduction. Worth the minimal trouble but not "shields up"
1
worldometers havs the total deaths for Gibraltar at 98
1
very few deaths reported
1
why? blink morse code lol
1
@johnwinward2421 To me cases Would be interesting, If they did random sample surveys to get valid estimates. The usual numbers are not reliable even to an order of magnitude. I used to do bird counts for the Forest Service. Willow Flycatchers get better surveys than people these days.
1
@johnwinward2421 To be clear, I trust the counts. But they are counts of test results, not estimates of total Singaporians who got SARS-Cov2. The total may be 2x or 10x or more, who knows? Only random surveys can say. The total is a big deal because it gives a # who are now immune. In terms of immunity, is Singapore in a poor position, or a superposition?
1
@johnwinward2421 Sure, I got that. And I agree the media plays up cases and that is a load of BS for the most part.
1
@toastertherens3117 True. The OP hypothesized that the low mortality in the recent wave was because most of the old or vulnerable died in the first wave. Worldometers shows 98 people died, total. Do you think there were only ~100 old or vulnerable people in the entire nation of 33k? If the answer is no, the hypothesis can be rejected.
1
worldometers has the mortality numbers...
1
yes it could be evolving to be less deadly i don't know of research on that, it's a hard thing to study
1
"no good deed goes unpunished"
1
most ever because it's always been very low
1
@RecicledCanadian What is "high"? Two people a day in a nation of 5.5. million? Or has it doubled to four a day? Most importantly, do we need to evacuate the reindeer?
1
How many deaths total did Gibralter have? Were there really just a few vulnerable people?
