@Joe I like what you wrote, "the human mind is so integrally entwined with the physical body..." and think that is key to the AI questions. We might someday try to make AI linked to physical bodies that it must care about, and see what happens. Self-driving car AI might be heading this way... although the program is not stuck inside a car, the program must care about the car and it's inhabitants. Maybe some sucgh life and death application will be the first to show actual self awareness/ emotion/ consciousness in a machine...

@holdenrobbins852 Yes, they have to have a reason to feel emotion. Maybe self driving cars will, for both the reasons you mention...
