Why keep the troops there at all? The threat isn't invasion, it's starvation and immolation. 80% could go home after Korea was liberated and the full blockade circle complete.

I agree. Best option: nukes. Second: blockade. Third: invasion. . You demobilize 80% of the soldiers, declare effective victory, and start rebuilding the world. If Japan wants to join, they surrender.

Ok so what, let them invade. Then when they lose, shrug, and if they win, invade them. . Kicking Russia out of Japan a lot easier than kicking Japan out of Japan. . This was probably covered in Yalta, to prevent such things.

Michael Hunt The OP wasn't about who started anything. It was if we can do it all the time

there were not able to do it

If it was tough for the US, it would have been impossible for the USSR. Maybe they could have taken a few more small islands, maybe more with US help.

it has never been blockaded

1. everything else does 2. not while burning

There are probably some where it fizzled though. If the big wigs didn't tolerate Feynman and had jailed him for cracking safes in Los Alamos, who knows.

Ok let's assume that's all true. Let's also suppose the first nukes failed to work. What do we do? I don't think we invade in the fall. . First though, a Yalta question: didn't the US and USSR already divide up Japan at Yalta, giving it to the US? Was that seriously not settled?

All that is true for invasion also, but 10 or 100x more. . Hypothetical timeline. Take the bombs out of the equation. The US blockades and invades the southern island. Casualties so bad LeMay is appointed Supreme Commander he burns the entire main island, every foot of it, from south to north. It would have darkened the northern hemisphere. . Japan would never surrender, just cease to exist. . Then the first time the a-bomb was used, years later, by some country, it would have been two countries back and forth with the a-bombs. The longer this took in history, the more likely it ended civilization. . end of simulation. . wow didn't mean to get dark there! Maybe we actually lucked out to make it through the 20th century.
