  1. there are r-selected and k-selected species. r is reproduction, k is survival. k selected species can be slow growing and careful. r tend to be expansive and high growth. k tend to be smarter.

  5. Seems like extreme forms of competition such as invasion are associated with times of rapid change, and imbalance in power. If things are stable for eons then a galactic ecosystem should develop a fairly low level of outright war.
