  1. think if it as insurance. investor thinks an MBS will go bust he buys a CDS from a bank (the insurance) if it goes bust then the bank pays him the value of the MBS and the bank gets the actual MBS which is defaulting it gets much more complex but that's a start for me... notice that he does not have to ever own the MBS that he took out "insurance" for
