yes, show us the tree! that says more than words. but, although species has a vuzzy line, it is still a valuable concept. to me it looks like there are 2+ cave lion species, from the cladogram in the refs

Except... timing. The overkill hypothesis arose due to the timing of the first people in the Americas and the end of megafauna. But it turns out the people were here at least 10k years before that.

@011keepers As a former bird biologist, my definition for birds was more about 'do' than 'can.' Do two types interbreed in nature enough so that they merge over time genetically? Or are they separate enough to have different evolutionary trajectories? On the genetic map from the references, looks like not only was Cave Lion a different species from regular lions, but there were at least two Cave Lion species!
