@qAngel Darwin woulda had to run around SA to get the picture. So that's appro. But the finches were a much simpler example, the process was much more obvious and recent. Also the Mockingbirds gave him a big big clue. I like the idea of Darwin going native in the Amazon and discovering ayahuasca and fox evolution.

@CynicalTrilobite Darwin was appalled at slavery and said so publicly. He came from generations of abolitionists. His grandfather wrote the famous phrase, "Am I not a man, and a Brother?"

Science isn't for things we can see, it's to infer what we cannot see. A theory is never 100% proven, because new observation can always arise.

In the future: Dr. Soandso collecting cosmic rays, so cruel! Let them free

This is often the case with the past. Or the future or the present for that matter

Indeed! The finches are a much more obvious example. Also the mockingbirds gave him a big hint.

Yeah it's better here in the future, where people don't eat, drive, order tools from Amazon, or do any of the other things that once upon a time resulted in a cycle of life on Earth.

If that's true then today's standards are hypocritical

We'd have to know what spot was the last spot to rise up out of the water. Sounds hard. Plus, it might connect and break apart many times before finally getting solid. But... we might be able to nail down a particular animal or plant migration to that precision!!?

Calling that fox a colonial scientist is oddly correct. It colonized South America by studying the ecosystem and finding opportunities to engage in trade.

@sydhenderson6753 Have you read "Expression of the Emotion in Man and the Animals"?
1
I reckon he'd miss it for the opposite reason: because they were too different to infer a recent common ancestry. They had evolved too far, seen too much... whereas the Finches were similar enough to infer that common ancestry, and the Mockinbirds too

Did he not submit both papers to the Royal Society?

@godfreypigott Banding birds in Hawaii, the crew often used the phrase "poke the bird" meaning take a blood sample from the bird... until a couple of Brits joined the crew...
