  1. I guess Binky didn't kill anyone, and you're too young to remember Alaska Zoo's polar bear who mauled 2 people who invaded his space. I went to Wikipedia to verify it was 1994. I also learned he died of a parasite brought in by a housemate. Many Alaskans suspected he was poisoned by a vigilante, so I missed that update at the time. Fans and merch designers were vocally supportive.

  2. For a hike in bear country I took a personal stereo with actual speaker -- which was rare in 1987 -- and got down the mountain just before the battery quit. After sundown I heard something at least as big as me in nearby brush, but didn't see it. 😊
