@fnordly About 1 in 100 infected die and many who recover have to spent time in the hospital before doing so. Even those with mild cases can decome Long Haulers and suffer for with symptoms for months or longer.

@michaelsawyer6887 but your numbers are radically different for the first set of 5 on 100k. Also, those figures are only deaths to date and don't factor in that some residents have not yet caught it but likely will as this surge is being driven by a more infectious variant than the previous surges. Likewise, not everyone drives. Surely a better comparison would be total NC citizen driving deaths for the last year/total NC citizens who were in a car last year vs. Total NC COVID deaths for the last yeae/total positive cases of COVID for NC citizens in the last year. That way you compare 2 rates.

@michaelsawyer6887 while the number of drivers stays relatively stable week to week, the number of people infected with COVID is increasing rapidly week over week.

@OutyMan as you point out, only about 10% of the country has been infected and close to half the country is unvaccinated. If a wave hits with even just 5% becoming infected at the same time that's millions of infected people swamping our Healthcare system and overwhelming our capabilities.
