If you consider the spread of life as not just the ultimate good but such a good that all others are irrelevant, I think longtermism makes sense. But a future where everyone is just treated as a cog in the mechanism to spread life doesn't seem like a future that would be very satisfying for those inhabiting it. In practical terms, though, I think I'm good letting longtermists be longtermists without giving them special power. People saying we need to make sacrifices for a better future could encompass those fighting climate change but also those who used to give shoot to kill orders for people trying to escape East Berlin. In the latter case, those saying they were in power for making a better future for all of humanity weren't the ones standing in the bread lines.
