I hear that helium is a pretty scarce resource. But I agree that using airships for transporting cargo makes a lot of sense if we can do it safely enough.

@vast634 And if we run out of helium I think it will both hamper cryogenics and make it harder to sound like chipmunks when we talk.

The U.S. Air Force looked into the possibilities of a nuclear-powered bomber. IIRC the weight of the shielding for the reactor was the biggest problem. And you have to deal with crashes; anything that could keep the fuel intact would probably be very heavy as well.

Charge people more per ticket if they have children. Problem solved!

It's probably a lot less. The USAF's total aircraft has a little over the number of 767s, most of which are fighters producing less CO2 per flight, and the air force flies them a lot less. But the trouble of asking militaries to make do without aircraft is that the one who complies for the good of the planet is the one who loses. And if all governments could be counted on to be good to their word, we wouldn't need militaries at all.

Mostly the infrastructure cost, I imagine. Also keep in mind the CO2 outpt Trains are slower as well -- the fastest commercial train (Shanghai maglev) runs at 268PMH, less than half the speed of a typical commercial airliner.

Extra benefits if they can be turned into bio-fuel.
