A problem with that is that the difference in performance of male vs. female in records is far in excess of the variance within each sex. Sabine didn't mention that, but of course she can't include everything or she'd still be recording even now. In the 50 meter, the difference between the 18th place man and the 1st place woman (0.32s) is far larger than the difference between the 1st and 18th place in either sex (0.18s). Children and adults vary in performance, but we don't lead 25-year-olds into little league.

@Kaje_ That might be the case here, of course. I'll keep an open mind.

According to some, genders are purely a social construct with no objective criteria. Can anyone explain to me how it makes sense to divide sports along purely socially constructed lines? If not, maybe sports should be divided by sex rather than gender?

That would apply to trans-men, who (I think) get testosterone, and I think very few trans-men are doing sports in men's leagues, and I think they wouldn't be very good at it. Trans-women (I think) get drugs that diminish performance (but still have a performance boost from past testosterone levels).

That might work for school-based events, but when it comes to pro sports, who would tune in to see the games by The National Pretty Good Football League?

I can think of a few possibilities, none of which I'm an expert in. (1) men have more fast-twitch muscles, so might move the controller's buttons a little quicker. (2) in some cultures, men have better skill in spatial geometry and (3) men vary more widely in intelligence, so a group with very smart people will tend to have more men.

@mrpedrobraga No, that isn't how it already is. Lia is not female, whether or not she's a woman.

The East German Olympics team stands as a counterexample. People do care about things other than money.

@chandra_creator Do estrogen and progesterone increase athletic performance, though?

@alexandertownsend3291 I'm not aware of anybody saying that trans people don't exist. Can you give me some references?

@alexandertownsend3291 Now you're assuming motives and then attacking people for what you assume. That seems unfair, somehow. Here's my take: 'woman" is a word, and doesn't have an objective meaning. if you say "trans-women are women" that's your opinion, and you have a right to hold your opinion. If someone else says that gender and sex are the same, that's their opinion. People shouldn't be required to conform to someone else's opinion in issues with no objective criteria, such as semantics. If you care more about how trans people feel than about fairness in sports, that's fine. You and I will just disagree on this issue.

I think it depends on what the data says. If males have a big advantage then it wouldn't be fair to rule out that people are trying to be fair.
