Leaders not lying to other leaders seems like a statistic, and something that applies poorly to any individual leader. IIRC, some things early on in the war suggest that Putin expected more popular support for Russia in Ukraine than he got.

@bazduggan4042 Not since the early 20th century. The US has invaded over threats or perceived threats to one degree or another, but it's lost the urge to annex territory into the U.S.

@danielallan8061 The war where tensions were inflamed by Spain's treament of those in its colonies? Where the US kept a base in Cuba but didn't annex the whole thing?

@divoulos5758 Sure, the west has grown more authoritarian under the left. But it's still far short of the tyranny in the USSR. It's like comparing the flu to pneumonia.

@angrydad1907 Maybe, but only if Putin was lying about wanting to make Ukraine part of Russia. Otherwise he was trying to expand Russia toward the threat he's supposed to be trying to avoid.
