  1. In this case they gambled and lost, but in the long run they'll have to blame capitalism, IMHO. There's less demand for women's soccer, so people providing it cannot charge as much, which is because the fans discriminate, which in turn is because nature discriminates. The best players are going to be overwhelmingly male. The women's league can either ask men to support them more than they do already, ask for legislation requiring people to watch them equally, or ask for the leagues to be merged so that the best players overall can compete with each other. I'm going to guess they'd go for option #2 before they go for #3.
