@HippopotamusPencil So if you were pregnant and someone accidentally or maliciously caused an abortion, you would consider that an assault? And I would think a minor one, if there were no permanent damage. You can grow a new fetus a lot more easily than a new finger.

@HippopotamusPencil Sorry, I was unclear: you would consider someone causing you to miscarry or abort to be assault rather than murder? As to the second point, I would consider the stabbing more major. Sure, someone might be fragile enough that being yelled at might be emotionally traumatic, and a stabbing could heal, but so what? At some point I think you have to assume reasonable consequences for an action. So if a fetus is just as important as a finger, and it being killed far less permanent than a fingerectomy, then I think it would be less serious an assault than one causing the loss of a finger.

@HippopotamusPencil Thank you for the answer to the first. As to the second, being beaten to an inch of your life causing a miscarriage is the more serious crime, but that's because it involves a lot more damage than just the loss of a finger. It would not be the miscarriage in and of itself.
