The Doolitle raid didn't do a lot of damage to military targets, but it had a powerful strategic effect.

@renemagritte8237 They were piece keepers because they wanted to keep a piece of Georgia.

Here's an odd question: since a German embassy suffered an attack, could that be considered an attack on German soil, triggering Article 5? Edit: A bulding housing a German consulate (not embassy -- my mistake) in Kyiv was attacked, but the consulate was empty at the time.

I think the central problem is that a treaty with Russia is like a treaty with the People's Republic of China -- meaningless in the long term. I think Ukraine either becomes part of a defensive alliance, gets nukes, or ends up waiting for Russia's next attempt at revanchism. Unless Russia itself breaks up or is broken up, but that doesn't seem likely.

How many can Russia equip, and how many can their logistics keep supplied through a winter? In my completely inexpert opinion, this puts a lot of pressure on Russia to take Ukraine quickly, before logistics can break down. More nuclear saber-rattling might ensue.

The main reason I think Russia didn't do it is because they haven't blamed Ukraine (AFAIK). It's hard to see them pulling this without having a fall guy set up first.

@MrCow579 It was empty at the time

@scipio8866 I think it's just as likely for Russia to consider this as lessons learned, re-arm to a greater degree, try to apply more quality control, and try for the next country when they see weakness in NATO (or in the US in particular)

I wouldn't depend on China splitting with Russia over tactical nukes. The PRC seems to dependably do what benefits the people in charge of the PRC. India and Turkey, maybe.

@matthewbartley2746 There is an alternative to fighting to the last man; Russians can and have been known to surrender.

We could counter by giving nuclear weapons to Ukraine. And enough range to target some Russian cities.

Compare Israel invading Gaza to what happens if Israel doesn't invade Gaza. What's to stop Hamas from provoking them again, but even worse?
1
I think that's the key point.

Was that written down anywhere? I keep hearing that claim, but I've never seen anyone back it up with objective, third-party evidence.

@roysmith3767 I saw that, and it wasn't impressive. I doubt the speaker would have backed up a U.S. invasion of Cuba on the same grounds.

I think it's the same reason people in commercials wear labcoats while talking about the medication they're trying to sell.

@cowboybebopenthusiast4135 Did you notice the people the US was trying to kill tried to blend in with civilians?

Can Ukraine hire Wagner?

If Putin is removed from office we might get someone more hawkish than Putin is, which might go bad in a globl way.
