  4. I wasn't sure this would happen, but it seemed likely. Let more crime happen and the higher crime areas will be hit hardest of all. And the rich who push a lot of this can get private security. Of all the things to be right about, this might be the worst. RIP to the lives lost and condolences to the people suffering from this explosion of crime and violence.

  5. IIRC, Finland has spent decades trying not to antagonize the USSR, and then Russia. I think the invasion of Ukraine suggested that placating Russia wasn't likely to be effective any more.

  25. I think Russia is too busy trying to eat Ukraine to seriously take Finland or Sweden right now. The idea is probably to join NATO before Russia can pacify Ukraine and then go on to the next country.

  26. Sweden has a capable military for its size. As far as what the existing NATO countries get out of it probably a bulwark against further Russian expansion. Keep in mind that Europe has played the hope-the-gator-eats-us-last game before.

  48. I was surprised to learn Memphis is bad, and I'm surprised again to learn New Orleans is even worse. Worse than this, worse than even this, I don't know a good way out of it. We need to understand the importance of fathers and law enforcement, and those will help, but it'll also take decades to have an effect. Supposedly a small minority of people are responsible for a huge number of crimes, and stopping them will mean a lot, but I don't know that it'll be nearly enough to get things back to normal.
