  1. IIRC, Finland has spent decades trying not to antagonize the USSR, and then Russia. I think the invasion of Ukraine suggested that placating Russia wasn't likely to be effective any more.

  8. I think Russia is too busy trying to eat Ukraine to seriously take Finland or Sweden right now. The idea is probably to join NATO before Russia can pacify Ukraine and then go on to the next country.

  9. Sweden has a capable military for its size. As far as what the existing NATO countries get out of it probably a bulwark against further Russian expansion. Keep in mind that Europe has played the hope-the-gator-eats-us-last game before.

  18. Russia signed a treaty to not invade Ukraine. Since Russia is unreliable with treaties, a treaty should not hold back Finland.

  21.  @forsakenquery  Finland and Sweden are very closely tied. If Sweden joins NATO, I'd be surprised if Finland doesn't. Likewise, if Sweden doesn't join NATO, I'd be surprised if Finland did.

  22. If we put nukes in Finland then you would have something to compare nukes in Cuba to. Finland being part of NATO is like Cuba being allied to the Soviet Union. If we'd invaded Cuba and annexed it at that time, would you have approved?
