@sappy.3xe I won't point out that we do pay for the services of firefighters, because I reckon you meant individually. In the US, different levels of government have different responsibilities. The federal government provides for most of the national defense by far, and states provide for most of the healthcare. I like the separation of powers. If more power rested with the states, we wouldn't be so rabid over who the POTUS is. People could vote with their feet to a state more to their liking. It's worth pointing out that Massachusetts has 98% health insurance coverage. People could move there for that. It's probably also worth pointing out that total expenditure for health care and the utilization of emergency services for health care haven't really improved there.
