  2. A city as a shining beacon of light? There was a city that used to be that: Detroit. Seriously, it was a major success story. Then it became the real-world version of Gotham. It's doing a little better now, but it's a long, long road back from where it was. Mismanagement of a city isn't something that goes away quickly.

  6. When teachers and schools blame the parents I've always felt that was a reasonable explanation. That's obviously not the case here, and given that most of the complaints of this kind come from parents, I have to consider it unlikely to be the major cause. My hat's off to this father and to his girl for catching up instead of giving up. And if anywhere needed school vouchers, Baltimore might be it.

But it had too may eggs in the automobile production basket, and racial tensions and riots sent Whites fleeing the city. It was a double blow that the city still hasn't recovered from.

  26. It's sad that she died, but the shooting was 100% her fault. If it were an adult in the same circumstances, I'd say the shooting left the world a slightly better place, but she was 16 and you're supposed to be stupid at 16. But sometimes someone does something stupid enough that they'll never get the opportunity to learn.

  30. It's not that I don't care... It's that they're adults, they're making these decisions, and they need to live with the consequences so they have more information to make these kinds of decisisions. It would be arrogant of me to intervene.

  31.  @CidSilverWing  I'm going to disagree. If other people stop it then the people pushing it will always think it might have succeeded if someone else hadn't interfered. OTOH, if it fails spectacularly then maybe some people will learn.
