That's always reminded me of the modern "critical theory" crowd who apply the same "logic" to Whites and, sometimes, Asians. I imagine the anti-Semites don't see it that way, though.   17. Even after Hiroshima, it took a nuclear attack on Nagasaki to convince Japan it was beaten. And even then, some of the government killed others trying to prevent the surrender. There was no way to force unconditional (or near-unconditional) surrender on Japan without brutal measures and this may have been less brutal than most.

The Berlin wall's very existence is sufficient warning to anybody who embraces Marxism, but even ordesr to shoot to kill those trying to escape a worker's paradise is not the only mark tallying the downside of Marxism.

  21. Thanks! Decline and Fall of the Roman Empire needs to be on my reading list. I've had the idle thought, if Western civilization did crumble, what lessons would future historians take? From what I can tell, people on the left seem to figure that the changes they recommend cannot fail, or that even their failures would be preferrable in a Bernie-esque "breadlines are good" way. I'm not too worried about those. I think they mostly won't learn from failure, but I'm optimistic that others will learn to ignore them. In the right I see even worse ideas -- very much in the minority, but more worrying to me because the failure of the left might lend them weight -- that would discard individualism and equal treatment. Being held up as an example of why democratic government cannot work would be about the worst epitaph I can think of.

  22. Leaders not lying to other leaders seems like a statistic, and something that applies poorly to any individual leader. IIRC, some things early on in the war suggest that Putin expected more popular support for Russia in Ukraine than he got.

  24. It'd be inetresting to find out how much of American wealth did come from the slave trade. Not only did the U.S. and the west achieve a lot more wealth than other slave-holding societies, but in the U.S., the north has been richer than the south for a very long time.

I do wonder what made Japan different -- I'd guess a culture strongly embracing submission to an existing authority, an authority that we brought into our plans. But that's just my guess.

  37. Not quite. Dr. Sowell said that most of the time, fear of punishment was the motivating factor. But when the slave was to use their own judgement or a technical skill, the situation changed. Slavery, like much of human interaction, is hard to put into a simple pigeonhole.

  38. Speaking in generalities, and frankly out of my depth, a lot of people around the world consider it ethical to favor their own tribe when given power. That's true in the U.S., even along lines of sex and race, and quite openly for many women and non-Whites. And while America shrugs off some corruption, like politicians giving campaign supporters political appointments, I think it's given an even wider acceptance in Africa.
