  3. Nick, the percentages of people working don't seem outrageous. There are children, the disabled, and retired folk in the general population. However, your snarks about San Francisco are right on! I visited there three years ago. I expected nirvana; what I got was a filthy city with attractions that were passing fair. I read before I got there some escalator in the BART system was shut because of fecal matter caught in the mechanism. Clean Mappy up and get back to work.

Nick, you started off in a grim neighborhood (the washer and drier in the front yard caught my eye), but around 9:00 minutes in, the houses were substantial, tidy, and spaced far apart. Granted, there were no people on the streets, but what time did you drive around? I wouldn't expect too many people to be out and about at 7:00 a.m. on Sunday. I could move into a neighborhood like that in a heartbeat! I checked the city website. There are parks and some things to do. Dealing with the drug problem would help, but good luck with that! The drug problem in the U.S. is NOT going away. (Keep visiting the Sackler Galleries and Wings, though.)

  8. Another awesome video! I think I told you before there's a new formula for meth on the street. The old meth made you clean your house for a week. The new meth makes one schizophrenic. Tell Mappy I did not know that about women being more susceptible to becoming meth addicts. Your guest was spot on. The desert looks empty, but it's still a complex ecosystem that doesn't deserve to get trashed. (Pun alert!)

  9. Cowabanga, Mappy! I actually visited Hawaii in 1992 when my brother was stationed on Oahu. One thing you should have mentioned, particularly with the no air conditioning fact, is that the trade winds are always blowing really, really briskly.

And the Brothers Grimm didn't write their folk tales (or "Marchen"). They collected them. They would ask the locals for any stories they'd heard from their families and neighbors, and they wrote them down. And they are NOT Disney stories: They have cannibalism, mutilation, and witches going off, "to some foreign land, doing quite well."

Fun fact: If a casino opens in a town, the odds that people living within a 20-mile radius developing gambling addictions goes way up! And the odds of dying violently are higher for gambling addicts than other addicts.

  24. OK. There are some grammatical errors I caught: 1. At the start, it's "...tell you and ME," not "...tell you and I." 2. The last song: It's "so're the schools," not "so's the schools." Singing!!! Mappy!!! Cell-phone-addicted Mappy daughter! I've been to Augusta, Maine, once or twice. It's a small town, but it's nice. I've always had a good time in Richmond, Virginia. I thought St. Paul, Minnesota, was OK, too.

The commercials balance your singing (if that what you call it). Glad to see the Mappy Family is still a thing. And the family hasn't grown at all. I lived in Iceland in 1974. In Keflavik, high temperature in the summer was 60 degrees F. In the winter, it flirted with 32 degrees F, which was a problem. If it rained, it would often freeze.

What to do? Offer the homeless mental health and addiction treatment inpatient? That would cost some money, but in the long run, it would be cheaper.

  31. Nick, you're correct about the county deal in Massachusetts. Where I lived (in Essex County) there were few county facilities, outside of courthouses and an agricultural high school. I actually visited Union County, Florida, when a friend of mine was in the state pen. I actually thought the town sort of nothing, but the people were friendly. The poor counties are probably voting democratic. Fun fact: The Sackler and Big Liquor families are probably voting Republican! Regarding the native Americans, we stole their land fair and square, after we decimated their societies with measles and smallpox.

  33. Alcoholism has always been a problem with native Americans, since they have only been exposed to alcohol for 500 or so years. Other cultures (Europeans) have had alcohol since the beginning of time. All the bad drunks died off before they could reproduce. Unfortunately, drug and alcohol treatment does not have a great success rate. Maybe a spiritual renewal (not a Madison Avenue renewal) might help. Another great video, Nick. You at least get out there and try to talk with folk.

  34. The Republicans' plan to bring fascism to the U.S. is the longest of long games. The doctor is correct. When I was in grad school, I wrote a paper on hermits and hoboes. Back in the 1980s, the homeless were on the streets because of mental illness or addiction or both. Everyone preaches recovery, but rehab is no panacea. The success rates for free-standing rehabs are actually quite low. I'm a progressive who knows history. I'll debate your doctor anytime.

  44. Nick, for the record, Worcester, Massachusetts, is not a bad city. It has like seven universities there. (I may be wrong on the exact number.) Just to let you know, I lived in Newport, Rhode Island, for a total of nine months. That's where I did my office training for the Navy. And, just to let you know, the ocean temps in the summer are great! Where I used to beach in the summer (Salisbury, Massachusetts), if the water was above 58 degrees, we'd stay in the water for an hour. You can throw some money my way anytime.

  60. While they're alive, there's hope. The good news is that addiction treatment is available for anyone who wants it FOR FREE! The bad news is that recovery is tricky. It's next to impossible to bet who will recover and who won't. The success rates are difficult to track, and for-profit rehabs cook their books. The rehab where I interned published success rates of 80 percent, when the actual rate was less than 10 percent.  @NickJohnson
