@jeffalbillar7625 You suggested they keep slaves in the Old Testament. And you’re right. The OT had laws given by the biblical god that made owning and beating slaves permissible.

@jeffalbillar7625 Yes, and it was permitted by the god of the Bible’s own laws. The doctrine shows this to be true. It’s just not a good place to start for moral guidance.

@kellyalves756 I didn’t respond to anything you posted, for the record. So your advice is fool-hearty at best. It doesn’t seem relevant whether one is a strict literalist or not, it’s what the doctrine includes about slavery that is problematic. It is curious, regardless whether literalist or progressive (I assume you meant), why anyone should worship the god of slavery. I

@digiryde I would not recommend using such an unreliable tool as faith. I’d prefer to hold as many true beliefs and as few false ones as possible.

@digiryde I’m not sure you do understand, but no offense meant. I don’t use faith at all. I don’t need to hold a faith position regarding success, or classes, etc. Science doesn’t use faith. That is silly. I don’t deal with blind spots by filling in those gaps with supernatural claims either.

@digiryde I understand people use the term faith in many different ways. Some consider it the same as the word trust. Religious doctrine does suggest faith is “evidence” of things unseen. Which means seems to equate to believing without evidence. The doctrine presents believing things when there isn’t evidence is somehow virtuous. I’m not as concerned about the label, as the action of artificially boosting confidence in claims for which there isn’t evidence, and often times evidence against such claims. My preference is to measure my confidence to evidence. I also have a preference of holding as many true beliefs as possible, and as few false ones. On the concern of believing without evidence, or applying faith, the problem is that it will increase confidence unwarranted, while not offering any pathway to truth. And for example, if all religions can depend on faith, they can’t all be right.

@user-ul7li5mu1s I’d like to have that discussion with you. In America, our rights are granted by “We The People”. There doesn’t seemed to be evidence enough to warrant claims that any gods exist, and certainly our country was founded as a Secular nation. The only rights we have are granted and governed by man. Can you offer any examples of any gods that granted rights of any kind, and how those are enforced by any gods?

@user-ul7li5mu1s People are individuals with all sorts of beliefs. You disregard the Nobel Prize as if it is irreverent, but then you want your dear leader to get it, when he hasn’t earned it? So, someone you like believes in a similar god as you. And you think this is evidence?

@user-ul7li5mu1s Free will doesn’t involve believing what you want, as far as I can tell. For example, can you choose to believe Hawaii floats seven miles over the ocean? Sure, you can pretend, but can you choose to actually be convinced? Seeing it may convince you. Hearing stories may convince you. But choosing to believe it doesn’t sound right. So, while I’m sure you’re likely convinced, are the question is whether you convinced for good reasons or just reasons? It’s more a matter of using reliable methods, which you can choose to do. Also, you claim to hurt no one on purpose. This may be true. You may not intend to hurt anyone. However, hurting yourself or others, even without intent, is it possible you’re still doing so? I’m not suggesting you are. Just asking thoughtful questions on the topic.
