Not really sure what will come first: a propulsion system that could take a regular human without killing it in the process to the closest neighboring star system, or a technology that lets us transcend our fleshy bits by digitizing the entire contents of our brains plus processes so that we can take whatever time is needed to get there, without having to drag our super fragile constantly rotting corpses along. Perhaps we need both. But most likely, we'll die before achieving either.
