Here's something to think about on the Silurian Hypothesis: if you take the size of civilization down, and imagine that they were just more sustainable in our modern understanding, it becomes plenty possible for them to have existed. Time would compensate for lots of things too. Thing is, we are limited in trying to understand, compare, and see things from our time and history perspective, obviously. So we tend to look for signs of life, civilization, cultures and what we generally call intelligence as reflections of our own. Perhaps there could be something else entirely different that we don't or can't understand in that massive period of time. Of course, most likely there was really nothing, and we are just a tiny weird anomaly that will correct itself soon enough, just a blip in Earth's history.

@stevetreloar6602 Perhaps a renewable resource or a source that we still don't fully understand? Unlikely, I know, but I like toying with the idea. Something that ran dry and caused their extinction? Or even, turned into a byproduct that was toxic to them but we rely on... xD Perhaps they jusy moved to a separate dimension taking what they needed with them. :P yeah... now I'm stretching it, I know.
