Unbalanced coverage that fails to catch all the nuances of the issue. Superficial and one sided. The worries about geothermals interfering with onsens are not unfounded, and are not only about unscientific claims as the piece seems to try to push. Nuclear power remains the safest and most efficient solution for Japan, for the most part. And geothermals are not by far the only sustainable source of energy nor the most efficient if people were to go that way. It's about needing a whole bunch of geothermal plants to harvest just a fraction of the energy Japan needs. Most of these geothermal plants will be competing space in places where onsens explore the natural landscape for tourism. Several onsens share space with wildlife. A whole lot of them really are miniature preservation sites. Also it's plain misinformation to say geothermal plants will be harmless and won't produce pollution. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Geothermal_energy#Environmental_effects By itself, onsens are stable because they are natural... some of the geothermals do emit noxious gases, but it's been that way in the landscape they are located for a long time. Geothermal plants could modify that for efficiency, to redirect streams wherever it's needed and stuff like that. It's not all that much different from fracking, mining and something like hydroelectrical power. It certainly is less harmful and coal burning, but the potential for cross contamination, rendering onsen spots useless, among several other environmental catastrophes is there. I suggest making a deeper research before trying to portray a subject like that in such an irresponsible manner.
