Double has approximately 15 decimal digits of precision. If someone was using that for this square, they would run into rounding errors. Largest 64-bit integer is 20 decimal digits (and starts with one) so even using that one could run into issues.

‘I’ve shifted the computer to work on the double checking backlog […], which is their experiments that they did Lucas-Lehmer testing on but they only got one failed result […]. Currently Mersenne prime number 48 through 52, there may be other Mersenne primes mixed in […] but I’m helping to steam-roll through that a little bit.’ So everything has been verified, but to make extra sure, he’s double checking Mersenne numbers between Mersenne prime 48 and 52.

@djsmeguk , the paper poses a conjecture that this is the case. It does not prove that.

I get what you’re saying, but at the same time link to this video was in description of the one on main channel.

@jeaniebird999 , GeForce RTX 4090 does about 80 TFLOPS. 80 ZFLOP is one bilion RTX 4090 cards running for a second. Or 1653 cards running continuously for a week. For comparison, training GPT-3 175B model took 314 ZFLOP (so four times the amount).

Claim at 5:00 sounds dubious. In Greek, lower-case sigma has two forms: one which only appears at the beginning and another which only appears at the end of the words. In Polish, ą and ę never appear at the beginning of the word. There’s only a handful of words in English that end in ‘q’.

@GreatOutdoors1 , yes. I didn’t go into details but FLOP is indeed a confusing unit. (And presumably it’s all integer operations in GIMPS). However, the calculations give some sense of scale.

Except of course, if there are N toilets, and the first one is indexed with 0, then the last one is N-1.

@Jupiterninja95 , I believe they did but they are now double-checking all the numbers in between. This is what I got from Luke’s interview when he mentioned that now he’s switching his cluster to verify the backlog.
