In your difference between rome and American, I disagree with the first, America being far removed while Rome is not. While Geographically America is indisputably farther, in the relevant technological eras the US is closer in many regards. Italy is protected by coast on multiple sides, and mountains on the remainder, putting it in a similar defensive position. Trade by Sea has become more rapid, and advances in land transport mean even inland regions are ultimately a similar distance to the coast.

@tastyfalcon1788 I certainly agree, but my point is it's much more difficult to move a thousand men in triremes than on an aircraft carrier. And so the overall effect is to put the the Italian peninsula and North America in a similar position.

@anvos658 I think you're considering to small a time scale. You can point to centuries this was true of Rome as well. The only time Washington has been sacked was a fleet that left from Canada with a large number of Canadian regulars.
