You know the Thor was already from Thor, right? Highlighting it isn't a pun

@robbirose7032 I just hate people getting excited about Thorium lol. It's just a distraction from Uranium with no actual benefit

Save people time, no, its not, its the Nuclear Fusion of Nuclear Fisson. I mean Thorium is technically possible but there is really no advantage. If you want clean Nuclear, use Uranium. If you want to distract people from ever building anything, hype Thorium.

@miya6008 I'm sure your right. In 30 years we'll live in a Thorium powered paradise. The fact we've had uranium for half a century and can't get a plant built is ... Idk, best to ignore that. But ya, this new super future technology, which still produces nuclear waste and actually has worse ores than uranium, ya it's going to do great.

@robbirose7032 I'll save time, they're really aren't. I mean thorium is perfectly feasible. It just has no actual advantage to Uranium. And we have a uranium industry. It doesn't do a dramatically better job in any meaningful sense. Even if you couldn't use a thorium reactor to make a bomb, you could put uranium in one to make plutonium. So you still have to constantly monitor them all. Accept you can use it to make a bomb. So. I used to be really excited about Thorium. But it's just clickbate tech bro Bs

@TheOdderlbert have you heard the term "reinvent the wheel". Until we can build Uranium reactors at a reasonable pace, policy will not allow thorium to be built. Nuclear technology is beyond technically mature, R&D is not the issue. We can make small changes to legislation that provides near infinite amounts of cheap and clean energy, or we ignore the actual issue and celebrate a hypothetical technology we will never actually build. Molten salt reactors are a little exciting. Thorium is just an excuse to not build Uranium. Sure it's cool. If you want to have some government money play with it whatever. Neptunium exists too, better throw money at that. But I really hate when the Internet throws hype at it. I feel the same way about fusion. We don't need a wonderful magical nuclear technology break through. It happened decades before I was born. People's energy should be at changing legislation. That's what actually matters..

@Stabacs I assume that's pointed at me. What advantage are you referring to? As I said, molten salt reactors are exciting. But there is no reason to tie this technology to Thorium. SMRs are promising. But there is no reason to tie this to Thorium. What about Thorium is better than Uranium?

@silvermushroom-gamifyevery6430 Thorium can't be used as a nuclear fuel because it is not fissile. All Thorium reactor's rely on breeding Uranium 233 from Thorium. excluding the fact you can make an inconvenient nuclear weapon with Uranium 233, a breeder reactor is a breeder reactor, and you can put Uranium 238 into one to make Plutonium. So any Thorium reactor would have to be monitored just as rigorously as a Uranium reactor, because you can put Uranium in. So what is the advantage if you still have to regulate and monitor as though it can produce a nuclear weapon, because it can.
