Really hoping now that this hits you stop being so dogheadidly against pipelines Mark. It would be great to have an east coast line before the Americans shut down line 5 and a West coast pipeline for a few 10s of billions to salvage the 100s of billions in Oil sands investment accessing a trillion dollars worth of resources before the US uses the economic depression to boost Albertan Seperatism and cut our country in half..

@ChrisR-xs9wp to be fair Alberta has put a lot into several that have been cancelled. I care less about who pays for the pipeline, particularly TransCanada should be subsidized by the Federal government. What I want to see is Alberta agreeing to save all royalties generated by oil going through the pipeline and invest it into eastern Canada, or at least non-energy infrastructure. Also a new upgrader in Alberta, and ideally to see large oil sands SAGD operations changed to using SMRs or otherwise nuclear steam, and green hydrogen used in upgrading. But it's rather a strategic necessity when we can't trust pipelines running through the US to bring our oil to Ontario..

@vanhamies8512 and with the US having the farthest right government in their history and actively looking to incorporate parts of Canada it seems rather urgent we get our friends out west to tide water

@ChrisR-xs9wp the 600k a day going the through the states he always brings up is worth absolutely nothing. We're about to be thrown out of the US market. Marathon will switch over and coincidentally OPEC is increasing output. So now CSW will have to be priced low enough to compete at the Gulf refineries against international crude not carrying a tariff. And if it doesn't fall by enough to make it worth using at the Gulf, we lose another 600k right away from Keystone. Which could even be reversed to move oil north. The SAGD operations can't reduce output by very much as Markham knows from Covid. Lower demand will quickly cause a rapid price drop. The government of Alberta is going to lose a third of its revenue while the CAD drops and the oilsands Mines, the main center of employment and entire basis of Fort McMurray, will shut down, which is a majority of actual oil sands blue collar high wage jobs, who will then be on EI. Alberta put billions into Keystone XL. But I'm not suggesting sharing royalies. Alberta owns the investments. That's like saying Norway gave away all the money in their Sovereign wealth fund. If we try to use oil as a weapon, they will shut down line 5 and all the upgraded oil Alberta produces that Ontario needs for their refineries. .

@ChrisR-xs9wp they put billions in to Keystone XL. I'm not asking them to share royalties. That's like suggesting Norway is giving away it's Sovereign wealth fund. I'm saying that they should invest those nationally to increase overall Canadian economic activity, reduce Dutch disease, and create stronger economic ties. They keep all the revenue generated. Frankly, the 600k bill/d Markham keeps bringing up doesn't exist. It's nonsense to think they are going to let us use their pipelines to export. They are actively trying to push us out of the market. A year ago I would have agreed but 6 months ago this kind of thinking will destroy us. I'm all for the 300k a day in Transmountain we should be increasing that this very moment, but we need alternative pathways for millions of barrels. In the short term we need to be able to replace marathon's 300k a day and the 600k a day going through Keystone. And within 2 years we will have another million blls a day gone after they reverse Keystone and start sending barges up the Mississippi. And if we try to hold back oil, or curtail to support prices, they will close down Line 5, another 400k a day gone, and completely cut Ontario off from not just Alberta's oil, which will have no alternative market, but all oil by pipeline until we can reverse Line 9, leaving Southern Ontario depending on Rail deliveries. TransCanada should have been treated as a matter of National security and a nation building project, not an economic one. I agree Alberta should have put more effort into CanaPUX and negotiating pipelines by offering capital investment instead of just expecting them built. But we're here now..

And more importantly, the economic conditions have changed. Markham is frankly not accepting that and wrong. He knows Marathon is ready to switch crudes. He knows from 2018 and Covid that we can't greatly reduce production and that our oil prices have to be low enough to be worth sending to the US Gulf coast and compete against non tariffed oil, or else we lose KeyStone flows, and with marathon that's a million barrels a day. He knows Michigan has been trying to close Line 5 to Ontario for years, another 400k and the ability to hold Ontario hostage. He seems unwilling to accept the US is never going to let us use their pipelines to compete with them and that we are going to see oil prices halve and the Oil Sands mines, responsible for most of the employment, shut down because they are the highest cost barrel and don't need to be operational. We have maybe 2M bbl/day we can rely on in the US. They will reverse Keystone. Any capacity over that doesn't exist. And it will lead to a price crash on our side that will strip Alberta of employment and royalties until we have millions of barrels a day to the Pacific. The only people this is good for is those seperatists, who will drive pro-american sentiment.

@MichaelKennedy-i6o maybe try offering to use the royalties from oil sold through the line to invest in Eastern Canada's manufacturing industry. Perhaps if other provinces had something to gain
