@Andy-P Thats actually largely true. A lot of the new coal stations are in Chinas West, where yhe coal mines are. Most of the stations built on the coast are either replacing much low efficiency and less regulated old plants, and the Big Chinese push for LNG was in large part to get NG to thier southern coastal cities to take coal plants off line. Alongside that, rhings like burning coal for home heating have been banned in cities. Say what you will, bur CCP saw air quality as likely the greatest threat to their power in the 2010s because of the level of pressure against it from the public, and did take serious action on it. Im not saying Beijing is great, but its certainly improved for the last decade when all the publicity was on it.

@JoanneLeon not gonna lie down town Toronto smells gross. I don't think a fully EV car fleet is a possibility in Canada, but anyone driving a car or ride share down town should be using one. Getting out of Union station to dozens of idling taxis stinks.

@MK_ULTRA420 EVs are not a waste of resources. From the perspective of China and Europe, who are strategically reliant on daily oil imports and pay higher fuel coats, EVs are easily justified. The US needs to adopt them because GM and Ford already can't compete on the international market, and because the drop in global oil demand is going to be detrimental to the US economy if it isn't able to produce EVs and Renewables. EVs are going to continue growing in efficiency, theres simply a lot more room for productivity growth compared to internal combustion engines, and the US can't afford to be in a position where China pulls well ahead in the technologies. @i6power30 Most of this comment is generally correct, but china does not run its cities on 100% renewables. Coal is still a relevant part of that mix, even if the actual plant in near the Renewable generation in the west and the power is transmissed, and I believe all the large cities have NG plants, many having LNG import terminals toward that. Chinese renewable build out is impressive and growing, but it is no where near 100% renewable to urban populations

@MK_ULTRA420 first of all, no one cares about pollution. I don't you don't China certainly doesn't. I don't understand people like yourself when they seemingly know China is a bad actor but then use metrics they obviously couldn't care less about. All that said, it really depends what you mean by pollution, and certainly this has more to do with industry standards than any rule that EVs pollute more in production. Secondly, even if they use more "energy", which is an incredibly imprecise term, they use that energy in forms that China and Europe can access reliably and inexpensively, in comparison to oil that is easily blockaded and under prices set by a cartel. It doesn't matter if a Japanese Sudan has the same lifetime emissions of an EV. Only a hippy cares. What matters is that China, the world's largest oil importer, is rapidly building out EVs and reducing oil demand globally in doing so, while taking over supply chains for a technology with significant room for improvement. The US and Canada have the highest cost oil production in the world, and our ICE car manufacturers are state backed failures. We've already lost most manufacturing and face trade deficits. We simply can't afford to let China control the supply chains and technologies that will dominate the global market.
