  2. After I retired, I tried my hand at typography and typesetting. The graphic design and prepress. The the Mac computer came along and suddenly everyone's a graphic designer. Then I moved onto video production. The the cellphone camera came along. So I focused on high end concert videos. But then the market crash happened and orchestras went broke. Now I'm repairing vacuum tube amplifiers for a living.

  3. I may be an ancient pre-World War II user but in my heart I still think I'm 16 years old. By the way on requests for topics I would like to see videos on how to build cord structure under a Melody. That has always eluded me.

  4. One of the things I learned from Leroy Anderson at Decca was that you dont compose at the piano. He says your fingers fall into familiar patterns. Compose music in your head and then write it down. Use the piano to work out details.

  11. I think the instrument you are referring to is viola di gamba. I recorded a 9th to 12th century group called Early Bird a few years ago. It was very similar to this.

  13. The first sample sounded like Japanese rock bands of the last decade. The rest sounded like WRKI the home of rock n rolls Playlist. There is an indie band called Sundowner or a song of that name from 17 years ago.

  14. Modern music's been dead for at least 5 decades, with rare exceptions. There's nothing in western mainstream music at all. In Japan we have Ryu Kawasaki and a few others who are producing original and innovative melodies and real thematic development. I might suggest the original soundtrack to Fumetsu no Anata e (To Your Eternity) for an example. I had an out of body experience when I heard it on a high end system. Major dopamine rush.

  16. I can audiate just fine until I lay a finger on the piano. The very first sound I make drowns out my auditory memory. Sure makes it hard to compose.

  19. My daughter has perfect pitch, discovered by her piano teacher. My African Grey parrot also has perfect pitch and can sing pop tunes and beep at the pitch of the microwave oven keypad before someone presses a key.

  22. Sure gats a lot of mileage out of that Lydian ostinato part. What I have a tough time with is harmonizing more than one part. I think I'm going to try experimenting on my Korg Kronos if I can figure out the sequencer.

  23. A little tidbit from history back in the 1920s '30s and 40s and up to about the mid-1950s the limit of recording on a 78 RPM disc was just under 4 minutes so all music had to be written to fit within that time constraint.

  25. In 2015, frustrated by sluggish 4K video editing, I decided to go all out and build a dual Xeon E5-2667-based system, on a server motherboard. Two $5,000 CPUs (which I got for half price a year later, used) 128GB RAM (motherboard supports 1.5TB), 12TB of SSD storage. A Quadro M6000 GPU. That's my editing system. Spent close to $15K. I have preexisting DCI 4K production display and a 2.5K GUI display on this system. It also is connected to my DCI 4K projector, made by Sony, which, itself, costs more than all my computer gear, but I got it for about 1/3 or retail cost. Last December, I upgraded my general purpose PC. i7-9700K, 32GB RAM Asus Z390 motherboard, about 5TB SSD capacity, GTX 1060Ti. Cost, about $2000. Performs respectably. It's connected to a 2.5K display and is able to access the 4K projector via a switcher.

  30.  @RickBeato  Unless you have over 800 Japanese CDs in your collection, you're probably hearing only the lowest levels of music that are popular on the web. I've over 800 CDs dating back to the 1970s and I collect the top 1% of Japanese music recordings. Very different from what you're probably sampling.

  32. I participated in Ethan Winer's DAC test. The goal was to prove that all dacs sound the same. At first I listened on headphones and could not tell them apart. Then I played them on my custom built speakers and the differences jumped right out. BTW I got all three samples correctly identified.

  33. Bass is the foundation of music. It shakes the earth. It moves you, both spiritually and literally. But it is only interesting if the bass is playing an innovative melody with unexpected changes. There is nothing more boring than walking bass. Oh, and Gary King, when he played with Bob James in 1974. He did great work on bridges and riffs.

  39. I can always tell it's an MP3 file because of that's whistling sound on the high end. Certain types of music bring it out more than others but pan flutes and breathy vocals I can hear it and of course the attack is gone on symbol crashes.
