  1. I think the instrument you are referring to is viola di gamba. I recorded a 9th to 12th century group called Early Bird a few years ago. It was very similar to this.

  2. As far as music that blows me away, check out Ryo Kawasaki 's "Fumetsu no Anata e" soundtrack. "Memory of the Flow" is one of my all time favorites.
