2% eh? Our electricity rates increased 30% in July.

55 years in the house I built myself (took me 40 years to build) and now facing tax foreclosure. There is no home ownership in America.

A sheet of 5/16 OSB is $48 at Home Depot today.

I have lived in the house that I built with my own hands 54 years ago at a cost of about $2,000. Today the property tax bills are close to $11,000 annually. I am on Social Security and cannot pay them. There is something very wrong in America. Meanwhile, I have a friend in Japan who lives in the house three times as large as mine on twice the acreage and pays about $300 a year in property tax. We are in the wrong country.

By next year, 30 million people will have frozen to death in America.

@ZegaracRobert There are nearly 50 million foreclosures working their way through the courts now, and evictions are in full swing now that the moratorium was lifted. It's going to be a cold winter, with the sun entering a maunder minimum as well. We can expect tens of millions to be living out in the elements, with no experience on how to survive.

@bbmcmu To a degree, but it prolonged the depression.

More like 2000%. Houses used to cost under 5 grand.
2
the government will tax all the land away.

Silver lining is that the new asshole neighbors that moved in across from me and who call the cops every time I listen to my stereo, have put their house on the market. The bad news is a parade of new york license plates coming to tour that house daily.
2
My only unpaid debt is property taxes.
2
I heard all that was a scam. Besides, you need money and knowledge to invest without being ripped off.
2
Convince them they won't get blood from a stone. They'll move on to more profitable victims.

We had WPA Works in the thirties. Its Socialism.

I used 3/4" pressure treated plywood for my exterior wall sheathing.

It cost my 989 dollars for a few 2x4s to build a solar panel array last month.

in Japan cash is still king.

I didn't pay the property taxes on my house this year. Instead, I bought a used pickup with plow and did some renovation to my house and used the remaining funds to do some landscaping and put up security fence. Had I paid the taxes this year, I could pay my electric bill much less do the rest. Something wrong with this country where the cost of local government is so high a burden on citizens.

@OVERHERE-OVERHERE Yes, they have to. Basically all essentials like food and fuel and electricity costs. TVs have gone down in price. Property taxes have shot way up.
1
@frederickmuhlbauer9477 Nobody's driving, demand is down, so price is down. I remember we were able to by a $33K SUV for $13K that year, 100s of them on the lot, dealer desparate to sell.
1
@frederickmuhlbauer9477 I was still paying over $3 a gallon up through January of this year.

His father was Irwin Schiff, author of THE BIGGEST CON. Irwin died in prison after the IRS railroaded him for writing his last book.

@cherrygarciafan The house is in legal limbo with the pending tax foreclosure, plus I built it without any permits over a forty year period, so it's uninsurable and un mortgage able.
1
@cherrygarciafan When I was evicted from my other home for an unexpected sewer assessment forcing that mortgage into foreclosure, I plunged the last of my money ($1850) into buying a 1/2 acre swamp lot. Slept in my car there for a couple of years as I started to build. Was living like a literal pioneer.
1
@cherrygarciafan I got a lot of my building materials for free. The windows were the most expensive part. Did the plumbing, wiring, heating over the next several years. Finally saved up enough to have a well drilled in 1973.
1
@cherrygarciafan Yup, since it was "non standard construction".
1
@cherrygarciafan Not brave, just aware that I must do or perish.
1
Some day I will go to Japan and seek refugee status.
1
@RothBalloon I don't believe that anyone ever got rich off of honest work. The rich either inherited it, stole it, or swindled others (or got the government to steal it by proxy).
1
@RothBalloon I'm going to hold out as long as I can. Maybe "defund the police" will take resources away from tax foreclosure evictions and I can remain in my house longer.
