  1. Auto manufacturers have lawyers to determine tort law cost vs cost to manufacture. When the Ford Pinto gas tank exploding problem was in the news back in the early 70s Ford Motor Company determined that it was cheaper to pay off the lawsuits then to fix the gas tank design.
