To hear former President Donald Trump tell it, Americaās farmers never had it so good as during his four years in the White House.
āLook I did get you $28 billion, in all fairness, right? Who the hell else would get you $28 billion from China?ā Trump asked a crowd in Sioux Center, Iowa last week, part of his final campaign push ahead of the stateās GOP caucuses Monday.
The $28 billion Trump mentioned didnāt actually come from China, however. It was paid out by the U.S. government to compensate farmers harmed by Trumpās trade war with Beijing.
Nearly half of Trumpās total $109 billion in direct payments were delivered in his final year, 2020, when USDA paid farmers more than $52 billion, an unprecedented sum since USDA began recording farm payment data in 1933.

But after a year under President Joe Biden, farmers say they're actually feeling the love.

Walz enlisted in the military and served his country for 24yrs.
In 2001, Walz completed the 20 years of service needed for retirement from the Guard, but he reenlisted after the September 11, 2001 attacks.
A National Guard colleague, Joe Eustice, recalled that at the time Walz retired, his unit's deployment was only a "rumor" and not yet confirmed, while his enlisted superior, Doug Julin, said that Walz bypassed his retirement approval, instead receiving retirement approval from two higher-ranked officers. The Minnesota National Guard confirmed that Walz retired two months before his unit was officially notified in July 2005 of its future deployment to Iraq; it deployed in March 2006.
Walz was trained on, carried, and used weapons of war when the U.S. was at war, but he did not deploy to an active combat zone during his service.
Though he was a command sergeant major at the time of his retirement, Walz's final military rank for retirement benefit purposes is master sergeant, as he had not completed the required academic coursework to remain a command sergeant major by his final day of service. The downgrade of one rank was effective from the day before his military retirement. A public affairs officer for the Minnesota National Guard in 2018 said it was "legitimate for Walz to say he served as a command sergeant major", while Walz's former battalion commander, John Kolb, described his usage of the title as "frocking". A reference to Walz on his official campaign website as a "retired command sergeant major" was later updated to read he "once served at the command sergeant major rank".
In the United States military, frocking is the practice of a commissioned or non-commissioned officer selected for promotion wearing the insignia of the higher grade before the official date of promotion (the "date of rank"). The need to frock is a result of the fact that, for some ranks, the number of people who may serve in them is restricted by federal law. Fordās decision to abandon its plans to open a factory in Mexico and instead expand its Michigan plant has more to do with the companyās long-term goal ā particularly its plans to invest in electric vehicles ā than with the administration. Fiat Chrysler's plan to invest $1 billion for a factory in Michigan had been in the works for more than a year and had nothing to do with Trump. Japanese company SoftBank announced its $100 billion technology investment fund three weeks before the U.S. elections, when Trump faced a narrow path to victory. Sprint said its hiring plan was a part of a commitment by SoftBank, which owns a controlling stake in Sprint. And Intel announced it would create at least 10,000 jobs at a ānewā plant in Arizona. But Intel actually announced a $5 billion investment in this factory in 2011 with then-President Barack Obama.

State Representative Charlice Byrd, a Republican, has filed a resolution calling for Ms. Willisās impeachment, but Republicans do not have enough votes in the Senate to unilaterally remove her from office.

February 2022, Abbott Nutrition recalled certain lots of Similac, Alimentum, and EleCare powdered formulas, as well as one lot of the medical formula Similac PM 60/40. All the recalled formulas had been manufactured in Abbott's Sturgis, Michigan, plant.
The formula shortage stemmed from a product recall by an Abbott Nutrition facility in Michigan, where unsanitary conditions and contaminated products led the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) to temporarily shut down the facility. Abbott re-opened the facility in early June, under strict FDA oversight, but was forced to close the plant again on June 15 due to torrential rain and flooding in the area. The Abbott closure was the catalyst to a crisis that has been years in the making: Policies and legislation that have permitted market consolidation of formula production by just a few companies, ongoing supply chain issues due to the pandemic, and corporate profiteering made this national shortage possible.
The shutdown of the Abbott factory in Michigan, which accounted for approximately 43 percent of total consumption of formula according to the most recently available data has had devastating consequences.
The shortage was especially acute for children with allergies, digestive problems and metabolic disorders who rely on specialty formulas. The Abbott factory is the only source of many of those products. The FDA has faced intense criticism for taking months to close the plant and then negotiate its reopening.
Tariffs can be as high as 17.5 percent, and there are quotas limiting imports from the rest of North America.

The Biden administration has taken several steps to increase supply in the short term. Foreign products that meet FDA standards are being airlifted to the United States, and the administration has invoked the Defense Production Act to give domestic producers priority for needed input components to manufacture more formula. Congress quickly passed the Access to Baby Formula Act to increase flexibility for WIC participants to purchase other formula products other than the sole-source contractor and the FDA prioritized the safe reopening of the Abbott plant while expediting the evaluation of imports to determine if foreign producers meet FDA safety, nutrition, and other requirements.

President Donald Trump quietly signed a bill into law Tuesday rolling back an Obama-era regulation that made it harder for people with mental illnesses to purchase a gun.
The original rule was hotly contested by gun rights advocates who said it infringed on Americansā Second Amendment rights. Gun control advocates, however, praised the rule for curbing the availability of firearms to those who may not use them with the right intentions.

Both the House and Senate last week passed the new bill, H.J. Res 40, revoking the Obama-era regulation.
Trump signed the bill into law without a photo op or fanfare. The president welcomed cameras into the oval office Tuesday for the signing of other executive orders and bills. News that the president signed the bill was tucked at the bottom of a White House email alerting press to other legislation signed by the president.
President Barack Obama recommended the now-nullified regulation in a 2013 memo following the mass shooting at Sandy Hook Elementary School, which left 20 first graders and six others dead. The measure sought to block some people with severe mental health problems from buying guns.
Had the rule fully taken effect, the Obama administration predicted it would have added about 75,000 names to that database.
Everytown For Gun Safety President John Feinblatt said he expected more gun control rollbacks from the Trump administration. In a statement to NBC News, he called the action "just the first item on the gun lobbyās wish list" and accused the National Rifle Association of "pushing more guns, for more people, in more places."

In 2001, Walz completed the 20 years of service needed for retirement from the Guard, but he reenlisted after the September 11, 2001 attacks.
A National Guard colleague, Joe Eustice, recalled that at the time Walz retired, his unit's deployment was only a "rumor" and not yet confirmed, while his enlisted superior, Doug Julin, said that Walz bypassed his retirement approval, instead receiving retirement approval from two higher-ranked officers. The Minnesota National Guard confirmed that Walz retired two months before his unit was officially notified in July 2005 of its future deployment to Iraq; it deployed in March 2006.
Walz was trained on, carried, and used weapons of war when the U.S. was at war, but he did not deploy to an active combat zone during his service.
Though he was a command sergeant major at the time of his retirement, Walz's final military rank for retirement benefit purposes is master sergeant, as he had not completed the required academic coursework to remain a command sergeant major by his final day of service. The downgrade of one rank was effective from the day before his military retirement. A public affairs officer for the Minnesota National Guard in 2018 said it was "legitimate for Walz to say he served as a command sergeant major", while Walz's former battalion commander, John Kolb, described his usage of the title as "frocking". A reference to Walz on his official campaign website as a "retired command sergeant major" was later updated to read he "once served at the command sergeant major rank".
In the United States military, frocking is the practice of a commissioned or non-commissioned officer selected for promotion wearing the insignia of the higher grade before the official date of promotion (the "date of rank"). An officer who has been selected for promotion may be authorized to "frock" to the next grade.
The need to frock is a result of the fact that, for some ranks, the number of people who may serve in them is restricted by federal law. Thus, even though an individual may have been selected for promotion and, for officers, confirmed by the Senate, they must often wait for a vacancy (headroom) to occur in order to be officially promoted.

Between 2016 and 2020, annual drug overdose deaths from synthetic opioids (excluding methadone) increased by 192% (from 19,500 to 56,894), according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). The CDC data also show:
- The average annual growth rate of drug overdose deaths from synthetic opioids was 31% while Donald Trump was president.
- Between 2019 and 2020, the last year of Trumpās presidency, the increase in drug overdose deaths from synthetic opioids was 55%.
Between 2020 and 2021, the first year of Joe Bidenās presidency, the increase in drug overdose deaths from synthetic opioids was 25%.
Because fentanyl is so potent in small quantities, it is dangerous for users but profitable for drug traffickers. The Trump administrationās decision to shut down all but nonessential traffic at U.S.-Mexico ports of entry on March 20, 2020, appears to have spurred traffickers to shift from heroin to fentanyl.
āDespite fentanylās builtāāin economic advantage, it took the massive restriction in imports and travel during the pandemicāparticularly the U.S. policy of limiting travel with Mexicoāto force U.S.-Mexico border traffickers to shift from heroin to fentanyl,ā testified David Bier of the Cato Institute during a House Homeland Security Committee hearing (February 28, 2023).
āWithin two months of the pandemic, fentanyl seizures overtook heroin by weight, and by the time the restrictions were lifted, fentanyl was accounting for over 90 percent of the seizures.ā (The weight of fentanyl seized by U.S. Customs and Border Protection increased ten-fold between December 2019 and December 2020.)

Claim: Illegal immigration leads to crime
Trump has repeatedly claimed undocumented immigrants bring crime to the United States. He did this again on Friday.
āWeāre talking about an invasion of our country with drugs, with human traffickers, with all types of criminals and gangs,ā Trump said during his speech declaring a national emergency.
But research suggests that immigrants actually commit crimes less frequently than American-born citizens, and that illegal immigration does not lead to more violent crime.
One study published last March in the journal Criminology looked at whether increasing illegal immigration over the last three decades caused an increase in violent crime. The answer was no. In fact, the researchers found that states with higher shares of undocumented immigrants generally had lower crime rates than those with smaller shares of immigrants.
Another study from the libertarian Cato Institute examined criminal convictions in Texas. This study found that U.S.-born citizens were much more likely to be convicted of a crime than immigrants in the country legally or illegally. The conviction rate for immigrants here illegally was 16% lower than that of native-born citizens and the rate for legal immigrants was 67% lower than native-born citizens.
Claim: Most drugs donāt come through legal points of entry
During his speech, the President also spoke about drugs. He called assertions that most drugs that cross the U.S.-Mexico border come in through legal points of entry and that a wall wouldnāt stop the flow of illegal drugs āall a lie.ā However, statistics from Trumpās own government contradict Trumpās claim.
āWe have tremendous amounts of drugs flowing into our country,ā Trump said. āMuch of it coming from the southern border, when you look and when you listen to politicians, particularly certain Democrats, they say āIt all comes through the ports of entry.ā Wrong, itās wrong. Itās just a lie. Itās all a lie. They say, āWalls donāt work.ā Walls work 100%.ā
According to the DEAās 2018 Drug Threat Assessment, the majority of drugs coming in illegally over the southern border are coming in through ports of entry.
āA small percentage of all heroin seized by [Customs and Border Protection agents] along the land border was between Ports of Entry,ā the DEA reported.
Prosecutors allege that Joaquin āEl Chapoā Guzman made his fortune by creatively smuggling drugs at multiple legal points of entry using a wide range of transportation modesāāincluding submarines, planes, tractor trailers and trainsāāthat would not have been thwarted by a border wall.
According to prosecutors, El Chapo smuggled hundreds of millions of dollars worth of cocaine across the U.S. Mexican border by hiding drugs in jalapeƱo pepper cans.
