"The CI?" I don't think that word means what you think it means. By the way. In the CI way, the instant feedback is 10 seconds away, on my workstation, before I make commit.

One of the companies where Dave worked made the highest performant trading system at the time, in java 1.6. This was a real-time trading system; which means a lot of laws/compliance to adhere to and large amount of money being exchanged. They where able to optimize their system to run 48 hours worth of acceptance tests in an hour.

What is wrong with working directly on master?

@thefekete Nope. I have worked like that for 14 years, on highly regulated, mission critical, finance applications. With teams from 4-50 people, maintaining 100's of services. Working directly on master is awesome. But arguing that it's somehow "wrong" must come from having only experienced branch-driven development. I have gone from TBD/CI with awesome results, to feature branches (by management edict) with bad outcomes, back to CI and bounced right back up.
